Background: Based in West Sussex (UK), the University of Chichester opened in 1839 as a school for training “Masters.” In 1873 it converted into a training school for women teachers and men didn’t return to its halls until the 1950s. After World War Two Chichester became an emergency training college for desperately needed teachers. As one of the UK’s most recent universities, Chichester gained its charter in the fall of 2005.

Doctorate Degree Programs - Subjects and Admissions:

The University of Chichester offers Doctorate Degree Programs in various areas of subjects including Dance, Fine Art, Music, Performing Arts, English, History, Physical Education, Sports Sciences, Social Work, Enterprise and Leadership, Teacher Education and Theology. As an entry requirement, all PhD degree programs require a good honours degree in related area of subject from a recognized university. However in some subjects, candidates may advised to undertake a masters or MPhil program and than will be transferred to PhD degree program. To apply, applicants need to provide proof of previous academic credentials, a research proposal, a personal statement, an academic reference and must convince the research committee that they are capable of a sustained piece of research that will produce a thesis at the end. Apart from all other requirements, as an international candidate you also need to submit your recent IELTS results (or similar qualifications), if English is not your first language. It is important to point out that before any official start of program, student will be invited for few initial meetings with research leader.

Doctorate Degree Programs - Duration and Process:

With over fifty staff members available to supervise research, Doctorate Degree candidates can customize their studies. As mentioned earlier, while students are usually first enrolled in Masters or MPhil Programs they can continue on to Doctorate Degree Programs as they progress in their research. The thesis is expected to be approximately 75,000 words in length. If accepted into the doctoral degree program, full time students will be expected to complete their studies in two to four years and part time students will be granted three to six years.

Doctorate Degree Programs - Financial Assistance:

The University of Chichester does not provide any financial aid to international students. It is possible to attend part time (for EU students only) or work part time with a student visa. Some students will be able to find financial aid through their employers or their own government. It is important to point out that university offers an alumni discount of 10% for candidates holding an undergraduate degree from Chichester University. UK and EU candidates might consider the opportunity of local government or higher education grants and loans.
