A general entry requirement for most doctorate degree programs requires second class honours degree (or in a number of subjects two years of related experience). However in some specific areas of research, you may need a Masters degree for PhD admission. International students who may wish to pursue one of the Doctorate Degree Programs at the University of Aberystwyth are required to send an admission application form with (2) letters of recommendations, copies of transcripts, personal statement (In some cases a research proposal) and a proof of English language proficiency (IELTS 7.0 or equivalent).
It is important to point out that recent TOFEL with maximum scores of 610 will also be accepted. Students who complete these requirements will be selected based upon the university’s ability to meet the unique needs of their desired doctorate research and their own academic achievement in the area.
Doctorate Degree Programs - Duration and Process:
The normal full-time duration for PhD Degree Program is a three years period (and two years for MPhil). Students are given full access to the extensive facilities at the university as well as the guidance of a full stable of professors who are experts in their fields. The expected result will be a unique research study with all accompanying research work (in the shape of various research papers and final dissertation) that can be defended before a committee of experts in last Viva Voce.
Doctorate Degree Programs - Financial Assistance:
University of Aberystwyth currently offers different open merit studentships for UK, EU and international students (Postgraduate Research Studentship (Aprs) Competition). To apply, you need an upper second class honours degree in the related areas of research. It is important to point out that current award for UK and EU students will cover all fees and living expanses for three years of full-time study. However same award for international students will only cover the difference of international fees and home fees. Apart from this current scheme, university also assists financial support for eligible students through other research grants.
