Doctorate Degree Programs | De Montfort University

Background:
Originally named as Leicester Polytechnic, De Montfort University was established in 1969 through the merger between Leicester College of Art and Leicester College of Technology. By the year 1992, Queen Elizabeth opened the Milton Keynes campus and De Montfort University emerged. After many years of restructuring and changes in the university, it now has 2 campuses. The Charles Fears and Leicester City. Presently, there are new buildings like the Law center and Performance Art Center.



Doctorate Degree Programs - Subjects and Admissions:

The main areas of doctorate degree programs and research in De Montfort University are Dance, Drama, and Performance Studies, Media and Film Studies, Historical and International Studies, Music, Technology and Innovation, Sports, History, New Media and Creative Writing and English. To be able to qualify for the doctorate degree programs (MPhil stage) the candidate should be a first or second honor student from any UK University or its equivalent, either professionally or academically. It is also important to note that direct PhD admissions require a Masters degree in related area of research from a UK university or equivalent. Foreign applicants are also welcome as long as they have the requirements and should pass the IELTS (at least 6.5 scores) if English is not their first language. To apply, applicants must submit completely filled up application forms together with the required academic references. After submission, the Student Entry and Support Division of the Academic Registry will check the form. If they think you are qualified, they will pass the documents to the right faculty. It is important to point out that university accepts applications in four sessions; October, January, April and July.



Doctorate Degree Programs- Duration and Process:

The MPhil students of De Montfort University are required to complete their research within 1 to 2 years. Those on a part time basis will take 2 to 4 years to complete everything. Full time PhD courses will take 2 to 3 years to be finished while 3 to 6 years is the time allocated for part-timers. All students will be registered for a probationary period of 3 to 6 months until Higher Degrees Committee will accept their applications. Two experienced supervisors will be allocated for constant help throughout this program. Necessary training for research will be a major part of this course. An annual progress report will be created to understand student progress towards a unique research. Student with PhD path will be transferred to PhD after 9 months (if they are Full-time) with the submission of a transfer report. The final part of this PhD program will be a thesis submission with final oral examination.



Doctorate Degree Programs - Financial Assistance:

Financial assistance for candidates in Doctorate degree programs and other programs are available in case the student will be short on funds for their tuition fees and other schooling expenses. The university itself does offer fully funded studentship grants to qualified students. Almost three quarters of the students are eligible for some degree of financial support. The support may be in form of bursaries and scholarships, grants, and loans. For PhD students, this kind of support can be divided into two divisions; studentships and bursaries with open merit competition. These kinds of studentships are available for international and national candidates. However a large number of research grants (including studentships and bursaries) will be offered by research councils (ESRC, AHRC, EPSRC) for UK and EU applicants. Both categories will cover fees and living expanses for three years of full-time research.
