Aston University was founded in 1895 as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School and became a university in 1966. University is centrally located in Birmingham.
Apart from their famous Business school, Aston University also caters undergraduate, graduate and research studies with languages & social sciences, life & health sciences and Engineering & Applied Science departments.
Doctorate Degree Programs - Subjects and Admissions:
In their key departments, Aston University offers PhD and MPhil research Degrees in various areas of research including Business Administration (DBA), Management, Languages, Social Sciences, Electronics, Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Life and Health Sciences and many more. Some of these degrees (DBA) are offered through the Distance Learning opportunity for senior-level managers who wish to remain in their positions while completing their studies. Entry requirement for most of these PhD degrees will be a completed first or upper second class Honours Degree from an approved University or Institution of Higher Learning. However in some areas of research a candidate must hold an approved Masters Degree in related subjects in addition to or in lieu of the Honours Degree.
If English is not the primary language, the candidate will have successfully passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL score of 610 and Computer 250) or the British Council IELTS Test (score of 7). Applications for the PhD Program should be received by August 1st at the latest though students are occasionally accepted in January, April, and July.
Doctorate Degree Programs - Duration and Process:
All available Doctorate Degree Programs begin October 1st and will be completed in three years full-time and from four to six years part-time. University provides the opportunity for guided study with qualified and experienced supervisor, associate supervisor and in some cases an advisor. Most courses require 90 hours of course work before final research thesis to be submitted. The research degrees program concludes with a presentation of the thesis and defense in last viva exam before a team of experts (examiners).
Doctorate Degree Programs - Financial Assistance:
Financial aid is available for qualifying students. Every year, (under various departments) university offers a range of schemes of financial support for home/EU and international students. Prominent schemes under Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) offers full financial support of three years for EU and UK candidates.
