Doctorate Degree Programs | Durham University

Background:
The Durham University was initially founded as University of Durham in 1832. It is one of the earliest universities to be established in England for over 600 years. Actually, it is the third oldest school in the country.


The University’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton was inaugurated in 1992. And almost 2,000 students were enrolled there. In 2005, the university changed its name to Durham University although it was not very well agreed upon by many of the academic and student members of the school.  Moreover, with the addition of this Queen’s campus, the number of students has significantly grown.

Doctorate Degree Programs - Subjects and Admissions:

Durham University covers various Doctorate degree programs, research programs, and Master’s programs. The school’s subject areas are: Engineering, Chemistry, Business, Computer Science, Education, Geography, History, Government and International Affairs, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Anthropology, Law, Music, and many more.

One can apply for Doctorate degree programs through online application process. However, you must also contact them and make sure that you have all the requirements and have met their criteria for acceptance. Please note that apart from traditional PhDs, Durham University also offers PhD by publications, Split-site PhD and  Professional doctorate in Theology and Ministry (DthM) with low residency options.

Duration and Process:
You can choose to study for Doctorate Degree Programs or Mphil for 1, 2, or 3 years (full-time basis) or 3 or 4 years for part-time. If you want to take up a PhD, they will require you to register with in one of their MA programs. These MA programs work as a research training degrees. MA courses require 50,000 to 70,000 words for its thesis projects.



Financial Assistance:
Durham University awards scholarships to students who demonstrate exemplary academic merit, but if you can’t avail this, there are still other ways that can help you pay for your studies. There are postgraduate loans available for eligible students for Doctorate Degree Programs, one is the Career development loan where you can repay the loan over an agreed time at a fixed rate. Studentships are also on hand such as the Clevening Scholarships and the British Council who provide financial assistance to deserving students.
